Field Study Correction

Field Studies

Photography

Room 9 and 10 have been working with our artist in residence Ms. Sara learning about photography. Yesterday we learned that the most important element to taking a photo is light. Today we learned about how different views can portray our subject in different ways. We practiced shooting pictures with our view finders that were "Birds eye view" and "ants eye view". We have one more session with Ms. Sara and then in the spring she will be back to help us complete a special project.

Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area

This week grade 1 students had the opportunity to visit the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area. Here we explored the landscape, learned about the animals that live their and learned how winter impacts the animals and vegetation in this area. We experienced what it would be like to be an animal like a vole or a mouse in the winter, staying warm in the subnivean zone (layer between the ground and the snow) and learned where the best place to build a burrow would be in order to survive winter. We had fun sliding down the "penguin slide" and looking closely and the different shapes of ice crystals. Thank you to the amazing teachers at Ann & Sandy Cross and to our volunteers who make it possible to go on field studies such as this!

Grade 1 Celebration of Learning

The Grade 1 students are hosting a Celebration of Learning on March 6^th, 2020. Families are welcome to come visit the grade 1 classroom on this day from 11:00-12:15. Our focus is Cause and Effect. We are inspired by Rube Goldberg’s work on cause and effect machines. 

Valentine’s Day

We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on Wednesday afternoon. Your child is welcome to bring in a valentine for each student. You can either just get your child to fill in the from section or they can personalize each valentine.

Our Community

Room 10 has been learning all about our community.We brainstormed different business, buildings and other goods and services that are found within a community. We decided that we wanted to create little shops and goods and service buildings for the kindergarten students. Our first set was to create iLAB plans that included our blueprint, steps and materials needed. We worked hard on making signs, prices lists and menus. Today we invited our fellow grade 1 friends to take a peak in the morning and then our kindergarten friends in the afternoon. We felt it was challenging to keep up with all of our customers but we had fun! Check out some pictures.

Snow Shoeing

Room 10 took advantage of this beautiful weather and trying out snow shoeing today. It was a bit challenging getting all the snow shoes on so half the class tried it this time and the other half will try next time. It felt strange walking in them and it took some practice getting used to them. What a beautiful day to be outside!
